Riding the Wave: Navigating the Ebbs & Flows with Confidence

Apr 18, 2025

If you’ve been in the voiceover industry for even a short amount of time, you’ve likely already felt it... the momentum building, auditions rolling in, avails being checked, jobs booked… and then suddenly, crickets. It feels like an emotional rollercoaster. One week you’re as busy as ever, and the next, you’re questioning if your mic is even plugged in or your emails are being sent.

Welcome to the natural rhythm of a career in voiceover.

The Truth: This Industry Is Ever-Changing

The voiceover industry, like many creative careers, doesn’t operate on a steady, predictable 9-to-5 clock. It’s unpredictable and full of variables. There are times when scripts are awaiting approval, budgets are being finalized, or companies are between projects. There are shifts in trends, voice types, or even broader industry changes that impact.

It’s not you. It’s the nature of the business.

Understanding that this ebb and flow is normal is the first step in learning how to ride the wave instead of being swept away by it. And the key to surviving it? Confidence.

When Business Slows, Confidence Takes a Hit

Let’s be real - when work isn’t coming in, it’s easy to start questioning everything:

“Am I good enough?”
“Did I lose my edge?”
“Maybe I’m not cut out for this after all.”

These thoughts are normal… but they’re also noise. Your confidence doesn’t have to disappear just because your inbox is quiet.

This is where inner work matters most. Confidence isn't just built from booking, it's built when you choose to believe in your own worth even when the phone isn't ringing.

Five Things to Do When Things Slow

  1. Sharpen Your Skills (and Confidence Will Follow)

Practice is one of the most effective paths to confidence. Take a class, do a workout, or revisit previous materials. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll feel when the next opportunity arises.

  1. Refresh Your Brand

Update your website, your demos, your social media, or explore other genres. Reconnecting with your brand strengthens your sense of direction and reminds you what makes you stand out.

  1. Reconnect with People (But Not Just for Work)

Confidence grows in community. Reach out to past clients, VO peers, and teachers or mentors… not to pitch yourself to anyone, but to simply stay connected. A little connection from someone who “gets it” can go a long way.

  1. Build for the Future

Use this time to develop business systems, social media content, and skills that will serve you. Whether it’s creating an email list, a CRM, or a social presence, doing something productive - no matter how small - rebuilds confidence through taking action.

  1. Take Care of You

Sometimes, the best thing for your confidence and productivity is rest. Fill your cup. Move your body. Eat well. Meditate. Get 8 hours of sleep. Step away from the booth. You are not your booking ratio.

Anchor Your Confidence in Something Deeper

If your confidence is only based on external validation - audition opportunities, bookings, callbacks, income - it’ll always be shaky. But when your confidence comes from within, from a belief in yourself, your value, your growth, and your commitment to your art, it becomes unshakable.

Remind yourself that when things are slow:

  • You are still talented.
  • You are still capable.
  • You are still worthy regardless of what’s on your calendar this week.

Confidence is a muscle. Keep flexing it. It takes time, discipline, and continuous work to maintain.

You Are Not Alone

Every voice actor, no matter how seasoned, experiences slow times throughout the year. What separates those who thrive is this: they expect the ebbs, they trust the flow will return, and they keep their mindset steady in the in-between when so many others start to fall apart.

The quiet moments can be a gift if you choose to see them that way. They offer space to realign, refocus, and reconnect with your why and your goals - both personal and professional.

So next time the tide goes out, don’t let your confidence go with it. Breathe. Reset. Trust your talent. And remember… it always comes back in.
