Finding Your Take Two: How Shifting Your POV Can Transform Your Auditions
When you step into an audition, your first read might be right on; but then it's hard to find something different to showcase your range. That’s when finding a fresh “take two” can make all the difference. One powerful way to do that?
Change your point of view (POV).
By shifting the POV - how they see themselves, the situation, or the other characters in the scene - you open up a whole new range of emotions, energy, and choices. This can turn a flat or generic read into something unique and authentic.
Here’s how changing your POV can help you discover your best take two:
1. See Yourself Differently in the Scene
Is your character feeling confident and in control? Or vulnerable and uncertain?
Try delivering the same lines from these contrasting points of view:
I’m the hero, ready to take charge.
I’m a skeptic, doubting everything.
I’m desperate, clinging to hope.
Each POV shifts your vocal tone, energy, and emotional depth, giving you a fresh way to interpret the material.
2. Reframe Your Relationship to Other Characters
How your character views others in the scene changes the delivery drastically.
Is your character trusting, suspicious, or indifferent?
Are they trying to impress, avoid conflict, or confront?
Changing your POV toward others lets you explore different dynamics, revealing new nuances in your audition.
3. Alter How You See the Situation, Product, or Service
Sometimes, the same script can feel very different depending on what your character believes in the moment:
Is this a life-or-death crisis?
A routine conversation?
Do you love and know the product or service well?
Or did you just discover the product or service?
When you change your POV on the situation/product/service itself, your pacing, tone, and emotional intensity naturally shifts offering multiple fresh reads.
Why Changing POV Works
Casting directors want to hear more than just the words... we want to feel the story through your voice. When you adjust your POV, you’re not just reciting lines; you’re inhabiting a character (a human) with depth and complexity.
Plus, having multiple POV options ready means your take twos won’t sound like repeats, but will be new truths.
Quick Exercises to Shift Your POV
Before you read, ask yourself: Who am I in this moment? How do I feel about myself in this situation?
Imagine your attitude toward others in the scene.
Think about what you believe about the stakes or outcome. How does that belief affect how you speak?
Record several takes each from a different POV and listen back to find what feels most alive and authentic.
Next time you’re stuck after your first take, try simply shifting your POV. That adjustment in perspective can unlock the authentic, compelling read casting directors want to hear and help you nail your audition (and feel confident submitting it).
